Learning from Outreach: Sustainability as a Shared Responsibility
Our volunteer experience reinforced the relevance of sustainability and connected to critical lessons from our classroom discussions on sustainability in tourism. Just as tourism relies on sustainable practices to protect natural and cultural resources, our efforts at Humber Polytechnic showed that even small actions, like reducing single-use plastic waste, can have a lasting impact on the environment. The outreach also highlighted the importance of educating others about sustainability issues, like how tourism operators must inform travelers of responsible travel practices.
This experience further demonstrated that sustainability is a shared responsibility. In tourism, we often focus on the role of businesses and governments in creating sustainable solutions. Still, this initiative reminded us of how individuals can make a difference. The success of the Friendlier program relies on active participation and awareness from every student, similar to how tourists must engage in sustainable practices to protect the places they visit.
Volunteering for the Friendlier program was a transformative experience, providing valuable personal development and a greater insight into sustainability. It reminded us that small, simple changes in our daily habits—such as choosing reusable containers—can collectively profoundly impact the environment. We encourage everyone to participate in the Friendlier program and take a step toward creating a more sustainable campus. Together, we can make a difference, one container at a time.
Reflecting on this outreach, we feel more connected to the sustainability movement and have a deeper appreciation for the role that every individual can play. Our involvement in this volunteer project has motivated us to continue advocating for sustainability in our lives and encouraging others to adopt these practices.
